A Laterite British Fort built on the shores of the Arabian sea at Talassery is the Fort at Tellicherry. Built by the British in 1725 fearing against the French who had settled 5 Kilometers south at Mahe Puducherry for trade reasons, today Mahe Puducherry is a Union territory under the Union of India. The British started a factory in Tellicherry and finally had many attacks from local rulers and Hyder Ali of Mysore. The Fort has an Anglican Chapel close to the sea called the St. Johns Chapel. There is a secret tunnel inside the fort which leads to the sea and later a lighthouse was built as part of the renovation.

Yet another interesting fact about this temple is that, unlike any other diety, the dog is considered as the vehicle of the Lord Muthappan, and hence, it is a common sight to see dogs being nurtured inside the temple.
